정의

A centrifugal separator is equipment that uses a rapidly rotating flow field or rotating bowl to separate heterogeneous mixtures containing phases with different densities. It is commonly applied to solid-liquid mixtures and immiscible liquid-liquid systems where gravity separation is too slow or cannot achieve the required separation efficiency.

Under centrifugal force, denser particles or liquids move toward the outer region of the separator, while lighter phases remain closer to the rotational axis. The separated phases are then collected or discharged through different outlets.

Compared with gravity settlers, centrifugal separators intensify phase separation by generating acceleration many times greater than gravitational acceleration, allowing smaller particles or droplets to separate within a shorter residence time.

How Does Centrifugal Separation Work?

Separation begins when the feed enters a rotating bowl, chamber, or flow field. Rotation creates a radial acceleration that drives phases with different densities in different directions.

The separation rate depends not only on rotational speed but also on density difference, particle or droplet size, liquid viscosity, equipment geometry, and residence time. Larger density differences and larger dispersed phases generally promote faster separation, while high viscosity and very fine droplets or particles make separation more difficult.

Increasing rotational speed can strengthen the centrifugal field, but it may also increase energy consumption, mechanical load, vibration sensitivity, and equipment maintenance requirements. Industrial operation therefore requires a balance between separation efficiency, throughput, and mechanical reliability.

산업 분야 적용

Centrifugal separators are widely used in chemical processing, petroleum refining, wastewater treatment, polymer production, food processing, and other industries requiring rapid phase separation.

Typical duties include removing suspended solids from liquids, separating immiscible liquid phases, clarifying process streams, recovering valuable products, and reducing the load on downstream purification equipment.

In chemical production, a centrifugal separator may be installed after crystallization, precipitation, reaction, or liquid-liquid extraction. For example:

Crystallization or Reaction → Centrifugal Separation → Washing or Further Purification

In liquid-liquid systems, centrifugal separation can accelerate phase disengagement when gravity settlers require excessive residence time or equipment volume.

Equipment Types and Selection

Different centrifugal separator designs are used for different separation duties. Disc-stack centrifuges provide a large effective separation area and are suitable for continuous clarification or liquid-liquid separation. Decanter centrifuges are commonly used for feeds containing higher concentrations of suspended solids, while hydrocyclones generate centrifugal effects through fluid motion without a rotating bowl.

Equipment selection depends on feed composition, phase density difference, viscosity, particle or droplet size distribution, solids concentration, required separation efficiency, throughput, and discharge requirements.

엔지니어링 고려 사항

A centrifugal separator should not be selected based on rotational speed alone. Process engineers must evaluate whether the dispersed phase can migrate and separate within the available residence time under the generated centrifugal field.

Higher throughput reduces residence time and may decrease separation efficiency, while excessive rotational speed can increase power consumption and mechanical stress. Stable feed conditions are also important because variations in solids loading, viscosity, or phase ratio can change equipment performance.

For this reason, centrifugal separation should be evaluated as part of the complete process system, including upstream phase formation and downstream washing, recovery, or purification requirements.
