Definition

Fractional distillation, also known as rectification, is a separation process in which repeated vaporization and condensation occur within the same equipment to separate the components of a liquid mixture.

It is a specialized form of distillation designed for mixtures whose components have relatively close boiling points. By creating multiple stages of vapor-liquid contact inside a distillation column, fractional distillation achieves higher separation efficiency than simple distillation.
